Icebox Experiment: Strawberry Pizza
I like to support my fellow Cleveland bloggers; we are a cool bunch, I promise you. Cooking in Cleveland has an event called Strawberry Moon.
Previously on blog, I had a feature that I used to do call Icebox Experiments, wherein I use the contents of my fridge to create some sort of meal. These are different from other types of cooking experiences when I plan what I cook and shop for those specific ingredients. I did have strawberries in my fridge, but a variety of extras with which I decided to make an extreme pizza. By extreme, I mean--strawberry pizza--not dessert pizza, but dinner pizza.
The dish was simple: carmelized onions, parmesan, mozzarella and roasted cherry tomatoes on a pizza. Then, the dish is topped with sliced strawberries, marinated in balsamic vinegar and grapeseed oil, and fresh mozzarella. It is then given a blast in the broiler. Finally, the slightly cooled pizza was topped with basil, parsley, and a little more sliced strawberry.
While there was some amount of consternation at the onset of this adventure, all constituencies gave heartfelt appreciation for this pizza. I would almost say that strawberries on pizza is not any crazier than adding that other fruit, tomato.

This gets the Most Unique Pizza award for sure. Looks delicious!
Imagination at its best Maybelles..Not only does it look pretty but am sure it must have tasted delicious!!
I love pizza more than anything in this world and I never thought of putting strawberries on it. How did it taste? It looks yummy. I am having homemade pizza for a party I am doing this Fri at my house so in your honor I will have to make one! I cheat, I buy dough though. I am married to a baker, what can I say...I am spoiled
P.S. No offense taken!!!
Works for me, and looks yummy! I think many people have forgotten or don't know that tomatoes are a fruit.
Thanks for your entry to the SMF :)
I think it looks great! I love strawberries done savory. Your crust looks beautifully thin and crisp as well.
Fabulous! I make something similar with watermelon, olives and feta. Your pizza just sounds delicious!
Thanks for the compliments.
Maggie, I must say the crust is all Maybelle's Dad (my silent partner in this). He is a pizza master.
Tash: I am very high verbal about most things but flavors are hard for me. I would say it was delicious to me--but I love fruit savory. If you like raspberry vinaigrette, you should enjoy this. One caveat--don't over cook the strawberries. i took this out as soon as the fresh mozza started to melt.
Ann, I am in fact a watermelon and feta evangelist. I take it to parties every summer and win people over to it. But I had not thought of it on pizza. I definitely have it on my list.
I never would have thought to use strawberries on a pizza. It looks and sounds good!
i'm intrigued! i won't lie--i was very skeptical of this from the beginning of the post all the way to the very end, where you brought to my attention that the strawberry is simply a replacement for the tomato. what a great point. i shall never doubt you again. :)
Oh, this is superb! The mix of savory onions, sweet berries, and acidic vinegar sounds simply amazing. I have got to make this!
Kevin, grace and susan--glad I peaked all your collective interests. hope to hear that you have made this.
